Android 2.2 Slated for Motorola Droid July 13, Droid X for August

Verizon Wireless will begin upgrading its first Motorola Droid to the new OS by July 13, said the Brighthand blog, which noted “unofficial but stable versions of this ROM have already appeared on the Web.” Droidforums.net said the Motorola Droid X will receive Android 2.2 over the air in August. Android 2.2 features significant speed improvements over Android 2.1, as well as new enterprise capabilities for Microsoft Exchange and Gmail, WiFi hotspot enablement and tethering, and a cloud-to-device messaging API.

Brighthand cited an unconfirmed report from Verizon Wireless that the company will begin upgrading its first Motorola Droid to the new OS by July 13. The blog said “unofficial but stable versions of this ROM have already appeared on the Web.”

Meanwhile, Droidforums.net said the Motorola Droid X, slated for a July 15 launch for $199 with a $100 rebate, will receive Android 2.2 over the air in August.

Verizon To Introduce Next Motorola Droid June 23

June 16, 2010 by admin · View Comments

Verizon Wireless on Tuesday issued invitations to the media and asked them to attend an event to be held in New York City. The invitation said that speakers at the event will include Verizon Wireless’ marketing chief, John Stratton; Google’s lead Android architect Andy Rubin; Motorola Co-CEO Sanjay Jha, and Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen. The invitation clearly says that the companies will announce the next Droid handset for the Verizon Wireless network.
Based on the list of speakers, we can make several assumptions about what’s being announced. First, the device will be made by Motorola (not HTC). Second, since Adobe’s CEO will be present, the device will likely ship with Android 2.2 Froyo and come with Flash Player 10.1 installed. There’s no other reason for Shantanu to be there. The invitation doesn’t share any details about the device itself. The event takes place at Noon on Wednesday, June 23.

Motorola to launch 2GHz Android phone in 2010

Conceivably Tech cites anonymous MOTOEXEC who was a little more chatty, talking up a device intended to “incorporate everything that is technologically possible in a smartphone today.” Whoa.

Manufacturers usually seem to avoid this “smartphone utopia” scenario like the plague, if for no other reason than to avoid destroying sales of current smartphones.

However, if this 2GHz chip-packing Android-based device with Nvidia Tegra graphics, Flash 10.1, gyroscope, HD video recording and output, HD screen and a greater-than-5-megapixel camera comes to life — especially by the end of this year — we could be looking at just that.

New Details Leak on Droid Xtreme, or ‘Shadow’

June 6, 2010 by admin · View Comments

Goodbye Shadow, hello Xtreme. New images and details have surfaced of Motorola’s Droid Shadow phone—now branded the Droid Xtreme—which was previously alleged to have been lost in a Verizon gym last week.

According to DroidLife, the new phone is definitely sporting an 8-megapixel camera and an “HD Video” label around the lens indicates that it’ll be able to shoot movies at a resolution of 720p at least.

The phone’s UI will run a partially customized UI based on Android 2.1 – at least according to the current batch of pictures that highlight the Xtreme’s interface. It’s unclear whether Motorola will opt for a last-minute upgrade to Android 2.2, or “Froyo,” prior to the device’s rumored July or August release.

Motorola Droid ‘Shadow’ Coming To Verizon In July?!

May 23, 2010 by admin · View Comments

A snapshot of a mysterious Motorola handset has been spotted in the wild with the Verizon logo on it. It is most probably Motorola Droid 2 a.k.a ‘Shadow’ Android phone supposed to launch on Verizon in July with Froyo.
It is supposed to rock with an 8MP camera capable of capturing 720p HD video. Motorola Shadow – as far as we know- will be launched with Android Froyo on it. On Hardware front, a 512MB RAM, a 4.3inch 800×484 capacitive multitouch screen, and an HDMI port are most likely to appear. If Shadow is really droid’s successor then I would predict a slide-out QWERTY keyboard as well.

Motorola Shadow is supposed to be nearly 9mm thick and might hit the markets in July.

Announced this morning at Google I/O in San Francisco, the update will initially be available to Motorola Droid and Nexus One owners in June. Android users will definitely be happy with this update, which delivers faster performance, tethering/mobile hotspot and of course, Flash support.

The regular price for the very popular Motorola Droid is $200 with a two-year service contract, but new Verizon Wireless customers can get this high-end Android OS smartphone for 90% off.
The Droid has been on the market for six months now, so it’s not surprising that bargains are becoming available.

For example, Amazon.com is offering this model for $130 with a renewed 2-year contract, $70 below the regular price.

COMPARISON: HTC EVO 4G VS. MOTOROLA DROID

May 7, 2010 by admin · View Comments

KEY DIFFERENCES
4G: The HTC Evo 4G is the first phone on a U.S. network to boast 4G connectivity, making it capable of connecting to Sprint’s WiMax network (where available) and enabling the device to reach peak download speeds of over 10 Mbps and peak upload speeds of 1 Mbps. In areas without 4G connectivity, the EVO will still operate on Sprint’s 3G network. Of course, the Motorola DROID connects to Verizon’s speedy 3G network.

Power: The Motorola DROID is a powerful device in its own right, but succeeding the DROID by a number of months, the EVO 4G is at the top of its class, armed with the latest processor and more RAM. The EVO 4G has a 1GHz Snapdragon processor and 512MB of RAM, while the DROID has a 550MHz processor and 256MB of RAM. While the difference may not be significantly noticeable in most day-to-day operations (e.g. checking email), the EVO 4Gwill outperform the DROID, particularly when many applications are running simultaneously.

Display: Like the HTC HD2 (T-Mobile), the HTC EVO 4G is equipped with a huge and gorgeous 4.3-inch touch sensitive 480×800 pixel display. The screen real estate makes the EVO 4G an ideal entertainment device — perfect for watching movies, browsing the web and even reading eBooks. The Motorola DROID also has an impressive and sizable 3.7-inch touch-sensitive display, and with 480×854 pixels, is slightly higher resolution and has significantly more pixels per square inch due to the display’s size differential.
