Motorola Android Event news

Verizon representative has said that Verizon won’t be attending the  Motorola Android Event and doesn’t know what’s being announced. And we won’t see At&t in the event either as Android and AT&T just cannot seem to get together. Motorola was working on two phones for the carrier but AT&T just rejected the devices claiming they were out of date.

Motorola, however, contends that a carrier partner will be part of next week’s event. So it’s probably going to be T-Mobile.

According to MKM Partners analyst Tero Kuittinen the Motorola Sholes destined for Verizon Wireless will be too expensive for success at $199:

the price tag could be too high for a phone he says is targeted at a youth demographic. He says the phone is likely to feature a graphics accelerator capable of 3D gaming performance that exceeds the Sony PSP handheld – while an “impressive accomplishment,” he thinks the intended price is going to look high versus rivals.

In addition Phandroid.com suggests that at the September 10th Motorola event the company is likely to announce yet ANOTHER T-Mobile Android phone – the Motorola Morrison, but  no Verizon phones.

No Motorola Android in AT&T?

All Things Digital reports that AT&T isn’t likely to be among the carriers taking part in the Motorola Android Event in SF. MKM Partners analyst Tero Kuittinen says that they believe the AT&T models have been canceled, and Verizon has pushed ‘Calgary’ into 2010.

Additional infromation, from Barrons, reveal that the two models that Motorola is developing for AT&T, code-named Sawgrass and Heron, were prototyped using Windows Mobile, and remodeling them for Android took so long that they looked dated before birth. The loss of AT&T as a distribution partner “changes the winter outlook for Motorola dramatically,”Kuittinen says.

A leaked Verizon Wireless data sheet, outlining its upcoming smartphone and mobile phone roster, hit the Web this week, offering insight into release dates for some long-awaited smartphones, including the BlackBerry Storm 2, the BlackBerry Curve 2 and the Google Android-based Motorola Sholes, among others.

The document lists Motorola Sholes to come to Verizon in late October release. The Motorola Sholes will mark the first-ever Google Android device for Verizon. It is also one of Motorola’s early entrants into the Android game. Earlier this year, Motorola said it would focus heavily on Android devices in a bid to stem slumping device sales and declining revenues. The Motorola Sholes will be the early fruits of that endeavor.

Gerson Lehrman Group likes Motorola Android

Gerson Lehrman Group just issued a report saying that Motorola is set to recoup some lost market share with the introduction of Android based phones. They forecast about a 15% market share gain. Based on the report, Motorola  is set to introduce a slate of Google Android based phones with early signs that they will be introduced into major networks in the U.S., Europe, Asian and S. America.

Gerson Lehrman Group says that Motorola has recently extended their open development efforts to embrace Android and is encouraging participation in applications development.  While following on the heals of some handset suppliers and operators, MOTO appears to be more directly targeting Android open dev.  MOTO will hold an open dev conference in San Diego in October, 2009. They also say that indications are that MOTO will open their own apps store early next year.
