Motorola DROID Gets Disassembled, Still Looks Great

It seems like the same cycle happens for every notable gadget release: blurry photos emerge, less blurry photos emerge, pre-release reviews come out, unboxing videos pop up, post-release images and videos are widely available, and then finally, said notable gadget gets disassembled. The Motorola DROID is in that last stage of the cycle yet even disassembled and torn apart, still manages to look good.
The guys at phonewreck commented that the Motorola DROID was pretty difficult to take apart which we like to think speaks to the DROID’s high craftsmanship and quality build. They also mentioned that the DROID’s sliding keyboard has the simplest sliding mechanism they’ve ever seen.

Rumors: A Verizon iPhone in 2010
This could hurt Verizon Palm Pre and the Verizon Droid, but here is the rumor from CNNMoney:
Verizon has made it pretty clear that it would cut a deal with Apple (AAPL), were it not for a couple of impediments: 1) the contract that makes AT&T (T) the iPhone’s exclusive U.S. carrier, and 2) the fact that Verizon’s network (based on CDMA2000 technology) is incompatible with Apple’s smartphone (which uses W-CDMA (UMTS)).
The first roadblock — AT&T’s contract — is set to expire next year, according to an interview chairman Randall Stephenson gave USA Today more than a year ago.
The second barrier could also disappear were Apple to build a new iPhone that is compatible with both AT&T and Verizon’s networks.
Last week, AppleInsider reported on rumors that Apple may be doing just that. Its source was a leaked OTR Global report, based on unnamed sources in Apple’s Taiwanese supply chain, that said Apple was making a “worldmode” phone using a new hybrid chip from Qualcomm (QCOM).
On Wednesday, a second source for the rumor emerged, this one with a date attached. According to GigaOm’s Colin Gibbs, Northeast Securities has issued a research note, based again on supply chain sources, that says Apple will launch a W-CDMA/CDMA2000-enabled iPhone through Verizon by the summer of 2010.
This assumes that Apple and Verizon can cut a mutually satisfactory deal. But judging from the tone of bitter resignation coming from AT&T executives lately, it sounds like Steve Jobs and Randall Stephenson may have finally come to terms.
Motorola Android Motus Passes Through the FCC
The Motus, a Motorola Android device set to sport a 5 megapixel AF camera, a 3.1-inch QVGA display, and HSPA, is expected to launch in early 2010.
It is very similar in stats to the recently launched Motorola Cliq, but it is not clear at the moment if the Motus will be running vanilla Android or MotoBlur, Motorola’s own Android variation.
What makes the Motus’s FCC approval big news is the fact that it was predicted in an earlier leak, which now seems to be a little more credible. If the leak was indeed correct, it indicates that the Motorola Sholes Tablet could be passing the FCC in the coming months, and maybe even in the next few weeks!

Motorola Droid: Scratch Test With Car Keys
This guy took his car keys and purposely slashed the heck out of the screen to see what would happen:
Looks like the Motorola Droid screen is great.
Motorola DROID accounts for around 25% of all U.S. Android web traffic?
Clicky (awesome site analytics service) released a report this morning compiled of data from over 150,000 websites which have their tracking code installed. It’s a pretty large sample size, and what they found was that with the DROID, less than a week old, already accounts for around 25% of all Android traffic they see in the United States.

Motorola Droid Not as Lifeless as First Thought
Motorola’s Droid isn’t such a dud after all, according to an independent analyst who has been monitoring Verizon’s closely watched Google phone sales.
Michael Cote of the Cote Collaborative believes Verizon has sold at least 400,000 Droid phones, more than four times as many as BroadPoint AmTech analyst Mark McKechnie’s best guess earlier this week. BroadPoint’s 100,000 sales estimate for the heavily hyped $200 Google Android-powered phone had been the most widely circulated guess on consumer demand for the Droid to date. “This is a moving target,” Cote says of his larger estimate.
Cote credits McKechnie with having accurate Verizon store Droid allocation numbers, but says that is only part of the picture. Cote, who is a pricing and product strategy consultant to several of the major industry players, says his checks of all Droid outlets including Best Buy (BBY Quote) stores and online sales show a much bigger number.
A Verizon representative declined to comment on the number of Droids sold to date.
Motorola needs to sell more than 1 million Droid phones this year to clear the low bar set by analysts. Unfortunately for Motorola, any new potential iPhone killer is bound to be measured against the iPhone’s debut performances.

Motorola CLIQ a Good Sign of Things to Come for Android [source: Gearlog]
The biggest thing about the Motorola CLIQ (aside from the phone’s unwieldy size) is that a company other than HTC finally got around to making an Android phone. The handset is Motorola’s first of what will likely be many entries in the space. The company, it seems, is putting all its eggs in the Google basket, hoping that open-source operating system Android will rescue the manufacturer from what has been, by all accounts, a few rough years.
Fortunately for Motorola (and the rest of us), it managed to get things right the first time. The CLIQ isn’t just Motorola’s first Android phone–it’s arguably the best handset to run the OS thus far. At PCMag, our reviewer gave the device our Editors’ Choice award, thanks to its terrific social-network-friendly skin on top of Android.
Motorola seems to really get the whole point of the OS: Unlike many other smartphone operating systems before it, customization is really the name of the game with Android. Motorola put Sidekick users directly in its sights with the device–a group that may well be a little less loyal to those devices, after this month–and has scored. The CLIQ’s success bodes well for the next Android device from the company, which by most accounts is due out soon for Verizon–which would also make it the first phone with the Google OS on that carrier.

Motorola Droid Is The Motorola Milestone In Canada
We know that the Motorola Droid will be called the Milestone in Germany, and now it looks like the folks over in Canada will have to get used to that name too. Telus has announced that it has got an exclusive with the Motorola Milestone and it should be available at the start of 2010. In case you’ve forgotten, the Milestone will have the same features as the Droid, such as a 3.7-inch touchscreen display, 5-megapixel camera, GPS, Wi-Fi, 16GB memory card and Android 2.0.

Motorola Droid May Soon Get a System Software Update

- Image via Wikipedia
Verizon Wireless and Motorola are reportedly working on an update for the system software on the Motorola Droid that will fix a number of small bugs. A similar software update for the HTC Droid Eris is also coming soon.
Documents describing the known bugs in these two Android-based smartphones have leaked out of Verizon.
Most of the issues with the Motorola Droid are more irritating than severe. Many of them relate to its messaging software. For example, Exchange ActiveSync currently can’t download attachments larger than 10 GB, and Yahoo’s e-mail service is not supported.
The leaked documents describing these bugs promise that software updates to correct virtually all of them will be released on Dec. 11. However, a few will have to wait until the update after that, on January 22.
