Android Gains Market Share In Q4!

comScore, an internet marketing research company, reported that Android devices saw the largest U.S. market share growth in Q4, between September 2009 and December 2009. The firm found Android has increased its hold on the market by a total of 2.7% to a total of 5.2% in Q4.

Motorola was the top ranked with 23.5% of U.S. mobile devices, LG ranked second with 21.9%, followed by Samsung 21.2%, Nokia 9.2% and RIM with 7.0%.

Android’s Rapid Rise to Smartphone Stardom

Do you remember Google’s Android mobile OS a year ago? Back then, it was just launching its app store and releasing the first phone powered by Android, the T-Mobile G1.

Fast-forward to today. Two days ago, Android surpassed 20,000 apps. Not only that, but the Droid by Google, Verizon, and Motorola has made a big impression. Oh, and don’t forget about the Nexus One, aka the much-hyped Google Phone.

Over 20,000 Apps Now Available For Android

One way of noticing that the Android OS is poised for a big breakthrough at the expense of Windows Mobile, Symbian and other operating systems designed to run on various mobile devices, is the number of applications already available for download in the platform’s own application store, Android Market. Lo and behold, that number hit the 20,000 milestone just moments ago, a little over 5 months since it reached 10,000 apps.

Yelp Comes to Motorola Android

The latest company entering the Android pool is Yelp. Yelp already has mobile apps for the iPhone, BlackBerry, Palm Pre and WAP phones.

Yelp for Android determines your current location (either using built-in GPS or a Wi-Fi-based location) and then lets you search for nearby businesses, read reviews of establishments and access a moveable Google map that can help you easily redefine your search based on locale.

Layar 3.0 Now Available, Pretty Darn Cool

Layar 3.0 has launched on Android Market and it is very cool but not yet all that practical/useful, especially since it is available only for all Android 1.5 and 1.6 devices. They will release a compatible version for the Droid as soon as possible.
