Motorola DEXT/CLIQ review

December 10, 2009 by admin · View Comments

This Android Life has a review of the Motorola CLIQ, here are some of the highlights:
The DEXT is a solid performer, all of the functions I’ve played around with have been nicely responsive (probably a little more responsive than the initial, pre-patch release of the HTC Hero was), although flipping between homescreens occasionally lags slightly. The slideout keyboard is tactile and straightforward to use, even though the keys are all squeezed pretty closely together, causing me to have the odd fumbled keypress. I actually found the software keyboard preferable. In fact, I found I generated fewer typos typing with the DEXT’s software keyboard than I seem to with my HTC Hero’s software keyboard.
Overall, whilst the DEXT isn’t up there with the best of the Android handsets such as the Hero or the formidable DROID, it’s still a very solid performer. There’s not much to fault in the phone, other than it’s slightly disappointing looks and uninspiring camera. The Motoblur take on contacts and social networking is innovative and plays on one of Android’s great strengths – being constantly connected. So, whilst it’s not a world-beater, the DEXT is undeniably a good addition to the Android stable.

Verizon commits to ‘newer’ Android for Droid Eris with Google Maps Navigation in Q1 2010

Verizon has just announced that it’ll be bringing the Droid Eris to a “newer” build of Android with integrated Google Maps Navigation for release in the first quarter of 2010. Since Google’s nav app works on 1.6 now, that really doesn’t give us much of a clue which version the Droid Eris can expect to see — but seeing how we have leaked Hero firmwares running on 2.1 at this point, that’d seem like a probable target.

Motorola CLIQ owners have long had a list of complaints about their device, but Motorola is hoping that an OTA update released yesterday will fix the majority of users’ woes. The update doesn’t do anything to change the fact the device runs on Android 1.5, but it does bump up the system version to 1.1.31. It does improve battery life and touchscreen sensitivity, better Bluetooth all around, accelerometer refinements and more

T-Mobile Losing Interest In Motorola Cliq?

December 2, 2009 by admin · View Comments

While hype for the Motorola Cliq was high, sales of the phone have unfortunately turned out to be unexpectedly low. So low in fact, that Oppenheimer analyst Ittai Kidron says T-Mobile has actually lost interest in the device–due in part to lingering issues with battery life. T-Mobile spokeswoman Alexandra Trask told FierceWireless that sales have been positive and disputes reports that Cliq sales were “falling behind sales targets.” Confirming a future OTA update for the Cliq, no detail was given regarding what would be addressed in the update or whether or not battery life was a prime reason for the update. Trask also denied reports of the device receiving less support, stating that “It’s very prominently featured in our stores. We’re doing a lot from a marketing perspective and merchandising perspective.”

Motorola Cliq Review: Better Than the Motorola Droid?

November 28, 2009 by admin · View Comments

The Motorola Droid may be grabbing all the headlines, but it’s not the company’s only — or first — Android-based smartphone. That honor belongs to the Motorola Cliq, which is just about as different from the Droid as an Android-based smartphone could be. And about.com think they like it just a bit better.

Here is part of their review of the Motorola Cliq:

Design

Like the Droid, the Cliq is a slider-style phone, but where the Droid is square and angular, the Cliq is soft and round — and that’s a good thing. I found it much more appealing to look at and more comfortable to hold than the Droid.

When the phone is closed, you see the 3.1-inch touch screen and three touch-sensitive buttons beneath it. The screen is smaller than I’d like, but not so much that it’s unusable. It sports a high resolution (480 by 320 pixels), which helps makes everything look nice and crisp.

The full QWERTY keyboard slides out easily from beneath the display, and is very comfortable to use. The keys are close together, but they’re nicely raised, making them easy to locate and press.

Bottom Line

The Cliq’s Motoblur interface will appeal to social networking fanatics, but anyone else may find it just a bit too much. Underneath that, though, the Cliq is a good-looking, easy-to-use Android phone.

What is the Android 2.0 release date for the Motorola Cliq

Here is the response that Android and Me got when they asked Motorola if the T-Mobile Cliq would get 2.0. Note how they say the phone can receive updates, but do not confirm 2.0.

“In regards to CLIQ with MOTOBLUR, it can be upgraded over-the-air and will evolve to support how people’s needs change. However, we haven’t announced any updates at this time.

The Droid that was released with Verizon is 2.0. But at this moment we cannot confirm when an upgrade will be available for the Cliq. However the phone is ready to receive software upgrades to both the Google Android OS, and the Moto Blur interface, therefore upgrades are being planned, but we don’t have a release schedule, or confirmation up to which Android version it’s going to upgrade.”

Doesn’t look good for the Cliq…

Android Phone Deals: DROID Eris for $30 & CLIQ for $99

Wal-Mart is currently selling the Verizon Droid Eris for $30 with new 2-year contract! That’s 70% off the listed price for a pretty amazing device on the “world’s most reliable network”. Unless you find it for free, it’s probably the best deal available.

If you’re interested in the T-Mobile Motorola CLIQ, T-Mobile is offering $50 off the $199.99 price this Black Friday Weekend. It’ll bring down the total to $149.99 which is infinitely easier to swallow. Or you can just hop on Amazon and grab the CLIQ for $99.99 with new 2-year contract.
