Verizon’s iPhone alternatives: HTC Droid Eris vs. Motorola Droid

December 16, 2009 by admin · View Comments
Filed under: Eris Droid, Motorola Droid

Mlive has a comparison between the two Droids:

Design: HTC Droid Eris
(But iPhone beats both Droids)

• Without a keyboard and a smaller screen, the HTC Droid Eris is much more pocketable and sleeker than the Motorola Droid. (The Eris also has a trackball.)

• Despite its name, the Eris doesn’t have the annoying “DROOOOID” sound effect and “I’m a robot from the future who is going to kill you” startup graphics that Motorola’s phone has.

• The Droid Eris speakerphone is loud, but not quite as loud as Motorola Droid.

• Like the Motorola Droid, the Droid Eris has a 3.5mm headphone jack and WiFi.

• Both Droids have a capacitive touchscreen and on-screen keyboard like the iPhone. But unlike Motorola’s Droid, the Eris supports multitouch pinching gestures for zooming in on web pages and in other applications.

• Both Droids have a 5 megapixel camera that is meh, but the Motorola Droid records video at more than double the resolution than Droid Eris (352 x 288 pixels).

• Unlike the the Motorola Droid, there is no physical button on the Eris to activate the camera.

• I had trouble with the Droid Eris screen unlocking while in my pocket and calling random people, but a software update has made the screen less sensitive while locked.

User interface: Advantage Motorola Droid
(Both Droids beat iPhone)

While both Droids handle multitasking well, the Motorola Droid runs Android 2.0 while the Eris is still running Android 1.5.

HTC chose the older operating system so it could use its Sense user interface for Android, which offers some special eye-candy widgets for such things as Facebook and Twitter. I found these widgets to be subpar to other application options on the phone, and I really missed the unified e-mail and Google navigation voice commands featured in Android 2.0.

Overall
The Droid Eris packed more of a punch than I expected. Like the Motorola Droid, I felt comfortable leaving the house without my iPhone.

While I was disappointed that the Eris didn’t have Android 2.0, rumor has it HTC does plan to push an upgrade to the phone over Verizon’s network.

While I prefer the extras the Motorola Droid offers, check out the Eris if a smaller form factor is one of your main requirements.

Android Phone Deals: DROID Eris for $30 & CLIQ for $99

November 24, 2009 by admin · View Comments

Wal-Mart is currently selling the Verizon Droid Eris for $30 with new 2-year contract! That’s 70% off the listed price for a pretty amazing device on the “world’s most reliable network”. Unless you find it for free, it’s probably the best deal available.

If you’re interested in the T-Mobile Motorola CLIQ, T-Mobile is offering $50 off the $199.99 price this Black Friday Weekend. It’ll bring down the total to $149.99 which is infinitely easier to swallow. Or you can just hop on Amazon and grab the CLIQ for $99.99 with new 2-year contract.

Initial Motorola Droid sales look good

November 9, 2009 by admin · View Comments

Early indications suggest that the Motorola Droid could be the breakout hit phone of the holiday season.
You might not have guessed it from the lack of long lines this past weekend, but analysts believe that Verizon is seeing strong sales of the Motorola Droid. The device went on sale on Friday across the country. And unlike other big launches for phones such as Apple’s iPhone or even the Palm Pre, retailers had plenty of devices in stock, and customers didn’t have to stand in long lines to get their phones.
Neither Verizon nor Motorola is providing exact sales figures, but David Samberg, a spokesman for Verizon, said sales were very strong over the weekend, with a steady stream of customers Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Store representatives in Manhattan confirmed this, with one sales associate telling me on Monday afternoon that there had been a steady stream of customers in the store all weekend and even through Monday.
Analysts also believe that the phone is selling well. Mark McKechnie, an analyst at Broadpoint AmTech, who covers Motorola, checked with a small sample of Verizon retailers around the country and said in a research note on Monday that he is encouraged by the anecdotal reports.
“While it is early, and the sample size is small, we are encouraged by our findings,” he said.
McKechnie estimates that Verizon had about 200,000 phones in retail channels for the launch, with many stores in larger metropolitan markets, such as New York and Los Angeles, getting about 300 devices. Stores in cities such as San Francisco got more than a 100 devices, and retailers in smaller cities got between 25 and 40 devices each.
Locations were stocked well enough that there were no reports of any stores that were completely sold out. An employee at the Verizon Wireless store on West 34th Street in New York said his store had gotten about 500 Motorola Droids and HTC Android Eris phones for Friday. The store didn’t sell out of either phone, but much of its stock is now gone.
That said, the store employee, who didn’t want his name used, said his store did sell out of the $29.99 Droid docking station, which charges the device. As of Monday, the company still hadn’t restocked its supply of that accessory.
McKechnie reported in his research note that the Droid outsold the HTC Eris, which also went on sale Friday. And checks with Verizon stores in Manhattan back up this claim. While there were plenty of customers looking at the HTC Android Eris in the Verizon stores I visited Monday afternoon, most people said they planned to buy the Droid. The main reasons were the device’s higher-resolution screen, better camera, faster processor, and latest Android software.
Still, plenty of customers noted that they preferred the look of the HTC Eris over that of the Droid.

Early Verizon Droid Sales Unknown, Don't Matter

Verizon’s first-weekend Motorola Droid sales were likely modest — judging by the tiny lines for the new Google phones at Verizon stores last Friday — at least compared to first-weekend iPhone sales the last few years.

But that’s okay. No one expected the Verizon Droid to fly off the shelves opening weekend. What matters to Motorola and Verizon is a strong, steady holiday season.

Verizon did not announce first-weekend Verizon Droid activations — the new Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris went on sale Friday morning — but told TheStreet.com that it sold “a lot” of Droids over the weekend. (“We don’t plan on releasing sales figures for the individual products,” the company added.)

“One thing seems clear, had Verizon hit the 1 million mark, you’d know about it,” TheStreet.com’s Scott Moritz writes.

Verizon Starts HTC Droid Eris Training, November 10th Launch?

The internal HTC Droid Eris training at Verizon has begun, which probably means the Verizon’s second slated Android is right around the corner:
HTC Droid Eris

Phandroid says that November 10th is a very possible launch date for the HTC Droid Eris. Having the Motorola Droid launch with a bang with the Droid Eris following shortly thereafter for a more affordable touchscreen 1-2 punch would make sense.
