What is this Motorola Android phone?
The folks at Gizmodo Brazil got their mitts on this device, and it looks like a Backflip without the crazy keyboard. The front is described as “more garish” than the Backflip. It’s running MotoBlur.
Because it has MotoBlur, it’s running Android 1.5. There’s no way to tell if this will get a wide release in European and the U.S. market.

HTC to lose #1 Android market share as Motorola sweeps in to take 2010?

- Image via CrunchBase
Wow, what a difference a year makes. It wasn’t that long ago that we were sounding the death tone for Motorola. A company that had risen so high with their popular Razr cellphone several years back and fallen into a black hole of a slump, churning out crappy and unoriginal handsets left and right. And then came Android with it’s open architecture and high level of customization that helped Motorola find their groove again when they released the Motorola DROID back in November of 2009.
As many of you know however, the DROID isn’t Motorola’s only Android device. Here in the states they’ve also got the Cliq and Backflip with many more in the wings. It is this momentum and laser focused attention on Android and Android only that is paving the way for Motorola to take over the title of #1 Android manufacturer from HTC.

Motorola hints at Google phone and more in Q4 earnings call
Motorola reported their Q4 earnings today and revealed some interesting Android news. The company actually showed progress in transforming to a smartphone company and reported a profit for Q4, but issued a disappointing profit forecast for the start of 2010.
“First, in smartphone, we plan to launch at least 20 devices, including at least one direct-to-consumer device with Google.”
This news comes with little surprise. We saw Sanjay at the Nexus One launch and already knew Motorola would sell a device in the Google phone store. Details about the device are still scarce, but rumors suggest it will be called the Motorola Shadow (see concept image above).
“CLIQ, BACKFLIP, and the majority of our new smartphone this year will feature MOTOBLUR. MOTOBLUR is our application and services suite that runs on Android platform.”
Nothing too new here. Motorola previously told us they wanted to include Motoblur on all their Android phones. The exceptions would be the Droid and whatever phone launches in the Google phone store. We think Google controls the software on those phones which is why they include stock Android.

Motorola Posts 4Q Profit but Outlook Is Low

- Image via CrunchBase
Motorola Inc. showed progress in its turnaround efforts Thursday but a disappointing profit forecast sent its shares sliding.
Motorola stock fell 73 cents, or 9.9 percent, to $6.67 in morning trading.
The shares are still more than double what they were trading for in March, as optimism has grown that Motorola can salvage its cell phone business. The first fruits of its new approach, the Cliq and Droid smart phones, went on sale in the fourth quarter.
Those phones were well received, and Motorola reporting shipping 2 million units. But overall cell phone sales were lower than expected, at 12 million units. Total revenue came to $5.7 billion, missing the average forecast from analysts of $5.9 billion, according to Thomson Reuters.
However, analysts did not appear to have taken into account that Motorola deferred $200 million in revenue from sales of smart phones, amortizing it instead over two years, in a new accounting step.
Looking ahead, Motorola said it expects a loss in the first quarter of 1 cent to 3 cents per share, excluding unusual items. Analysts expected a profit of 3 cents.
Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha said the loss would come from the planned launch of several new smart phones, with the attendant sales, marketing and support costs. At the same time, he expects smart phone sales to be down from the fourth quarter, when Verizon Wireless put a massive push behind the Droid.

Motorola announces Baidu search alternative to Google Android phones in China

- Image via CrunchBase
China and Google’s relationship has been on the ropes since Google uncovered a Chinese hacking initiative that sought emails of Chinese dissidents, and it seems Motorola is expecting the worst. Motorola has announced that it will offer the Baidu search engine as an alternative to the default Google search engine on Android-powered Motorola smartphones in China. Baidu is China’s largest search engine, and Google’s top rival in the Chinese market. The move will give Motorola a viable search alternative for its Android phones, should Google decide to completely pull out of the China.

Motorola’s next Verizon Android phone pops up in inventory

Verizon’s Cellebrite inventory system showing, next to the Motorola Calgary (otherwise known as the DROID Devour), an Android-powered handset which neither Motorola nor Verizon has officially confirmed yet. You can think of it as the Droid’s younger, ganglier sister; it’s a bit strange looking, a lesser camera (3 megapixels instead of 5), and Motorola’s social-network-centric BLUR user interface.
As mentioned, Verizon’s still keeping mum on this handset, so there’s no word yet on pricing or availability.

Motorola reportedly doing all Android in 2010
Motorola is among the top Android phone manufacturers right now, and it looks like it’s going to increase its standing in 2010. CNet Asia spoke with Spiros Nikolakopoulos, VP and GM of Asia Pacific and International Distribution for Moto’s Mobile Devices end, who says:
- Look for 20 to 30 smartphones worldwide in 2010 “and, at this moment, all of them will run Android.”
- One-third of Moto’s Android engineering team is in the U.S., another third in Korea and another third in China. No word on how many people that entails.
- The “Motoroi” brand is specifically for Korea. the Chinese version of the phone will go by a different name. (And we assume the U.S. version, too, if and when it comes here.)
- Opening up MotoBlur is “on the cards”, but no time frame was given.
