T-Mobile Losing Interest In Motorola Cliq?
While hype for the Motorola Cliq was high, sales of the phone have unfortunately turned out to be unexpectedly low. So low in fact, that Oppenheimer analyst Ittai Kidron says T-Mobile has actually lost interest in the device–due in part to lingering issues with battery life. T-Mobile spokeswoman Alexandra Trask told FierceWireless that sales have been positive and disputes reports that Cliq sales were “falling behind sales targets.” Confirming a future OTA update for the Cliq, no detail was given regarding what would be addressed in the update or whether or not battery life was a prime reason for the update. Trask also denied reports of the device receiving less support, stating that “It’s very prominently featured in our stores. We’re doing a lot from a marketing perspective and merchandising perspective.”

Motorola’s Android-powered Sholes tablet breaks cover, HDMI port spotted!
The mythical Motorola Sholes tablet is starting to become reality. Since before the launch of the Android-powered Motorola Droid and its slide-out QWERTY keyboard, we’ve been hearing rumors that Motorola has a slate-style (tablet) variant in the works – the Sholes tablet.
Today we now know that the Motorola Sholes tablet picks up where the Droid left off. It’s got the same 3.7-inch 854 x 480 touchscreen, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a robot-chic design aesthetic. Taking things a bit further, we learn that the Sholes sports an 8-megapixel autofocusing camera, HDMI-out port, a TI OMAP 3430 Cortex A8 processor possibly clocked at 800Mhz, multi-touch support and Motorola’s Crystal Talk DSP call enhancement technology. We’re also expecting the Sholes to launch next year with the latest Android 2.1 OS on board, possibly on T-Mobile’s US network.

Motorola Android Rumors
Filed under: CLIQ, Motorola Droid, Motorola Motus, Sholes, T-Mobile
Android and me has some rumors that are relevant to the Motorola Droid and Motorola Cliq:
Motorola Cliq: the Cliq might be stuck with Android 1.x. Rumor has it that Motorola has not budgeted to bring up all the device drivers for Android 2.0.
Motorola Motus: this device will launch in Q1 and be powered by Android 1.5. The phone is essentially the same internals as the Cliq (Qualcomm 528 MHz CPU).
Motorola Sholes Tablet: The phone is essentially a Motorola Droid minus the keyboard and with an updated camera. This device is headed for T-Mobile in Q1 2010 and will feature Motoblur.
Based on these maybe T-Mobile users should skip the Cliq and wait for the Motorola Sholes Tablet?
T-Mobile USA Upgrading to HSPA By End 2009, HSPA+ by 2010
T-Mobile USA, the nation’s fourth largest carrier, will be upgrading its 3G network to 7.2 Mbps HSPA by the end of 2009 with an HSPA+ to faster 21 Mbps data speeds in 2010. Current devices, including the MyTouch 3G, the T-Mobile G1, and the Motorola CLIQ will be able to take advantage of the 7.2 Mbps HSPA speeds. News of the fast network upgrades should be welcomed for customers of the carrier; T-Mobile was the last of the big four to implement 3G.
The carrier has already begun deploying its 21 Mbps second. Philadelphia is the current testbed for the fast data transfer speeds.

Motorola Droid May Be Released by T-Mobile USA
Verizon is going to launch the much-anticipated Motorola Droid later this week, and an unconfirmed report says this high-end Android-based smartphone is also on its way to T-Mobile USA.
T-Mobile already offers several smartphones running Google’s OS, but none of them have the Droid’s 3.7-inch, WVGA+ display.
The evidence that this model is on the way to T-Mobile comes from a leaked screen taken from Motorola’s intranet. This shows a list of this company’s Android-based phones for T-Mobile, including two that haven’t been announced yet (see screenshot here):
Sholes UMTS T-Mobile US
Sholes Tablet T-Mobile US
The code-name for the Motorola Droid is Sholes, so apparently a version of this smartphone with support for T-Mobile’s 3G service (which uses UMTS) is in development.
Equally intriguing is the mention of a tablet version. This will likely offer the Droid’s large touchscreen without the sliding keyboard.
When either of these versions will be released is not known.
Also on the leaked list is the Morrison, the code-name for the Motorola Cliq, which is already available.

T-Mobile makes Project Dark phone rates official [source: Electronista]
T-Mobile on Sunday quietly launched its Even More Plus plans in a bid to undermine rival US carriers. The plans provide a simpler and potentially less costly approach to phone service and scale linearly in voice minutes and data features: users pick from 500, 1,000 or unlimited US voice minutes and can add either unlimited messaging alone or messaging plus data. Prices as a result range from as little as $30 for voice only to $80 for an all-unlimited plan.
Device pricing has also been inverted compared to the typical American approach: subscribers aren’t asked to sign a contract by default and only have to do so if they prefer a subsidized price. Although not fully confirmed by the product pages, it’s believed T-Mobile will let customers pay the full price of a phone over as many as four instalments.
The strategy is aggressive and contrasts sharply with other high-end plans from other carriers, particularly T-Mobile’s only GSM-based rival, AT&T. A starter smartphone-class plan at T-Mobile with 500 minutes and unlimited data costs $60 per month versus AT&T’s minimum $70, which unlike T-Mobile’s also excludes any messaging; adding unlimited messaging brings AT&T’s plan up to $90 for similar features. Sprint comes closest with a $70 plan that brings 450 minutes and similar features, but Verizon asks $100 for 450 minutes and the combined unlimited data and messaging features.
T-Mobile’s approach is combined with a new push into Android smartphones like the Motorola Cliq and Samsung Behold II and is counting on lowering the actual, long-term cost of owning a desirable smartphone to lure away competitors and move past its fourth-place standing among US providers. The $30 difference in plans would amount to $720 saved over the span of two years, or more than enough to offset the full price of most smartphones.

Will T-Mobile CLIQ be part of Project Black?
A new rumor has emerged that T-Mobile is planning to offer an ‘everything unlimited’ plan that will include unlimited voice, SMS, MMS and data for $50. Apparently this plan will be called “Everything Unlimited” and is meant to represent T-Mobile’s new strategy which will essentially see it try and poach subs from various low-cost carriers. Internally, T-Mobile calls the plan “Project Black”. We wander if the Motorola CLIQ that is going to be launched at T-Mobile soon will be part of the plan?
