Motorola Sholes and Calgary in Verizon's internal tools

BGR updates that the “Cellebrites”, the devices used by Verizon employees to transfer customers data from phone to phone, started showing the Motorola A855 Sholes/Shules/Droid/Tao and the Calgary A555. That’s not a surprise for the Droid which, based on current rumor, is due out October 30, but it is an interesting update on the Motorola Calgary.

Motorola Sholes and Motorola Torch battery covers

Motorola published press shots of the battery covers of both the Sholes (Motorola Tao, Motorola Droid) and the Torch. Notable is the fact that they’re showing two versions of the Sholes’ cover, one with a Verizon logo and one without, so this is a strong indicator that there’ll be a second model — most likely for overseas GSM markets.

Sholes, Tao or Droid

The Motorola Android phone for Verizon used to be called the Sholes, then Tao, and today the new rumor is Motorola Droid.

Anyway you want to call it, the Motorola Android Sholes/Tao/Droid will not come with MOTOBLUR but instead be a straight Google device, but it will have support for Adobe Flash.
Updated specs for the Sholes/Tao/Droid include:

  • 3.7″ screen
  • 854×480 WVGA capacitive screen
  • 5 megapixel camera
  • ARM Cortex 500MHz CPU
  • Facial recognition using the built-in camera (apparently you take a photo of someone and Google will pull in search results based on the image)
  • Custom Motorola Interface/UI, no MOTOBLUR, no Verizon UI
  • Available in black and titanium colors

There will be a keyboard-less version that’s planned for 2010.

Verizon to launch Motorola Tao on December 1 [androidandme]

androidandme reports that they received a mysterious letter from their tip line. The document describes an upcoming phone headed for Verizon Wireless and all the specs match up with the Sholes (Tao) specs. The name of the phone is conveniently missing and has been replaced by the letters “XXX”. The letter says the phone will be available December 1, 2009.

There is also new information about the Tao — Slashgear has a new picture and info about the new Verizon phone: 6GB of onboard storage together with a microSDHC card for adding up to 32GB more. There’s also the usual 3G EVDO Rev.A and WiFi, and the suite of Google applications such as Maps, Gmail and Latitude.

Google releases Android 1.6 – Motorola Tao to get it

October 1, 2009 by admin · View Comments

Android 1.6, which is codenamed Donut, has been rolled out to unlocked developer handsets and is coming soon to the G1 and possibly other carrier-supported phones. This version includes some compelling improvements for both users and developers. One of the most significant advancements is the introduction of CDMA support in the telephony stack which will open the door for Android phones to launch on Verizon and Sprint.

The first Android-based CDMA handset to launch will likely be the Motorola Tao, which was previously codenamed Sholes. Rumored to have a WVGA display and an OMAP 3430 processor, the Tao could break the pattern of lackluster specs that has afflicted virtually all previous Android offerings in North America. Android 1.6 introduced expanded support for screen resolutions, which makes WVGA seem pretty likely. Some blurry shots of the device have recently surfaced and are attracting interest on gadget blogs.
