Android’s Rapid Rise to Smartphone Stardom
Do you remember Google’s Android mobile OS a year ago? Back then, it was just launching its app store and releasing the first phone powered by Android, the T-Mobile G1.
Fast-forward to today. Two days ago, Android surpassed 20,000 apps. Not only that, but the Droid by Google, Verizon, and Motorola has made a big impression. Oh, and don’t forget about the Nexus One, aka the much-hyped Google Phone.

SHOP4APPS: Motorola’s Android application store revealed
Android and Me discovered the Motorola Android application store: the app store is web based and can be browsed from any Android phone. Since the store is web based, it can also be easily browsed from a desktop computer. Motorola is also currently developing a native client for Android called the MotoAppstore.
Update: Motorola has taken down the store and it is no longer accessible.
Free Eris Droid
@VZWPRDC just twitted:
New #Droid offer: Dec 4-Dec 7 Buy 1 droid phone (#Motorola or #Eris) and get 1 Droid Eris free (buy online or in stores) More info to come.
I guess we, the early adopters, got to pay more but not to enjoy a free phone. We hope that VW will compensate us like Apple did with the iPhone.
Layar 3.0 Now Available, Pretty Darn Cool
Layar 3.0 has launched on Android Market and it is very cool but not yet all that practical/useful, especially since it is available only for all Android 1.5 and 1.6 devices. They will release a compatible version for the Droid as soon as possible.

THE DROID IS DEAD
ADEO RESSI, who is the founding member of TheFunded.com, wrote a blog post yesterday on why he return his Motorola Droid:
- Keyboard is hard to use.
- Camera takes lower quality photos and video.
- Dropped calls.
- Ghetto app store.
- No Google Docs.
- Slow browser.
- No multitouch.
- Sluggish at times.
- Crackly speakerphone.
- Weak audio/video player experience.
He did mention some good things:
- Nicer Gmail.
- Removable battery!
- A flash.
- Clearer screen.
- Some UI niceties, like persistent status and system updates.
- Turn-by-turn navigation.
- The constant singing of “droid.”
Overall he says: INFERIOR PRODUCT to the iPhone.
