Android Firmware 1.3.18 for Motorola Cliq Brings Issues Along

Mobile phone maker Motorola has recently delivered a new software solution for their first Android-based handset, the Motorola Cliq. The software update 1.3.18 was released over-the-air for all users of a Cliq on T-Mobile, and it seems that the firmware created a lot of issues, tough it was supposed to solve others.

However, a wide range of T-Mobile customers are already reporting on the forums that there are a lot of issues the new solution created, and that some of them are rather serious problems, it seems. Among the issues Cliq owners are reporting on the forums, we can count a problem with the date/time, (set at 31 December 1969 and cannot be changed); problems with the touch keyboard; force close error for Google Voice; issues with the text messages; Gmail, calendar and contacts are also not syncing; or battery life problems. At the same time, there are also some reporting that, following the update, the following message was received, “Error Signing Into account: There is a problem with the clock on the device. Please contact customer service.”

According to the mobile phone carrier, they are aware of the situation and are working on resolving the problems as soon as possible.

Motorola had “accidently” released a test version of the update (Software version 1.3.8) for the Motorola Cliq. According to the description of the update, software 1.3.8 included improvements to the battery life, touchscreen sensitivity, improved GPS tracking, a new option for assigning functionality to a double-press of the home button, and more. As quickly as the update was leaked, it was soon pulled after approximately 15 mins. What does this leak mean? Well, it could mean that Motorola Cliq owners could be getting an official update pretty soon.

Motorola Droid Software Update 2.0.1 Is A Winner

Here is a highlight of a review of the new 2.0.1 Motorola Android software version from Information Week:
he update process was extremely quick. Upon booting the device, I received a notification that there was an update available. I accepted the update, which then automatically downloaded, installed, and re-booted the device. The entire experience took perhaps three minutes. Nice.

I noticed immediately that the Droid is faster. Swiping from side-to-side to access the three different home screens was much smoother, with no stuttering. The motions were fluid and looked good. The main menu itself also experienced less stuttering. Swiping up and down to get at all the applications was easy and not herky-jerky as before.

Of course, the main fix is the camera. The camera boots in about 3 seconds now (not bad, but not stellar). Taking pictures has been greatly improved. The camera focuses faster, snaps the picture faster, and processes/saves the image faster. In other words, the camera is actually usable now. Before, it wasn’t. This is a very welcome change indeed.

It is too early for me to comment meaningfully on the supposed battery life improvements, but Verizon says it should perform better.

Motorola CLIQ owners have long had a list of complaints about their device, but Motorola is hoping that an OTA update released yesterday will fix the majority of users’ woes. The update doesn’t do anything to change the fact the device runs on Android 1.5, but it does bump up the system version to 1.1.31. It does improve battery life and touchscreen sensitivity, better Bluetooth all around, accelerometer refinements and more

T-Mobile Losing Interest In Motorola Cliq?

December 2, 2009 by admin · View Comments

While hype for the Motorola Cliq was high, sales of the phone have unfortunately turned out to be unexpectedly low. So low in fact, that Oppenheimer analyst Ittai Kidron says T-Mobile has actually lost interest in the device–due in part to lingering issues with battery life. T-Mobile spokeswoman Alexandra Trask told FierceWireless that sales have been positive and disputes reports that Cliq sales were “falling behind sales targets.” Confirming a future OTA update for the Cliq, no detail was given regarding what would be addressed in the update or whether or not battery life was a prime reason for the update. Trask also denied reports of the device receiving less support, stating that “It’s very prominently featured in our stores. We’re doing a lot from a marketing perspective and merchandising perspective.”

How To Improve Motorola Android Droid’s Battery Usage

November 15, 2009 by admin · View Comments

Here are some ideas from Netnetblog on how to improve the Motorola Droid’s battery life:

There are two things that need addressing about the power-hungry Droid. First, TURN OFF GPS. It makes complete sense to have it on out-of-the-box so as to let the customer get familiar with the functionality. Verizon should stick a posty on the package that states “use GPS only when necessary.” Turn that GPS on and watch the battery bar slide at 100 mph. I don’t need GPS to surf the TV anyway.

Second, there is a “location” feature that uses the position of the cell towers, GPS (I think) and Internet databases. It’s not known how much this feature contributes to the battery-juice hunger though. The service continuously updates as you move about St Louis. It is cool for applications that provide you local content such as movies, store sales, etc. Some advocates have issues with this and classify it as a privacy issue. No sleep lost here. If privacy isn’t breached this way, it is probably breached a half-dozen other ways. You may turn this functionality off to conserve on battery juice.
