Motorola Posts 4Q Profit but Outlook Is Low

Motorola Inc. showed progress in its turnaround efforts Thursday but a disappointing profit forecast sent its shares sliding.
Motorola stock fell 73 cents, or 9.9 percent, to $6.67 in morning trading.
The shares are still more than double what they were trading for in March, as optimism has grown that Motorola can salvage its cell phone business. The first fruits of its new approach, the Cliq and Droid smart phones, went on sale in the fourth quarter.
Those phones were well received, and Motorola reporting shipping 2 million units. But overall cell phone sales were lower than expected, at 12 million units. Total revenue came to $5.7 billion, missing the average forecast from analysts of $5.9 billion, according to Thomson Reuters.
However, analysts did not appear to have taken into account that Motorola deferred $200 million in revenue from sales of smart phones, amortizing it instead over two years, in a new accounting step.
Looking ahead, Motorola said it expects a loss in the first quarter of 1 cent to 3 cents per share, excluding unusual items. Analysts expected a profit of 3 cents.
Motorola co-CEO Sanjay Jha said the loss would come from the planned launch of several new smart phones, with the attendant sales, marketing and support costs. At the same time, he expects smart phone sales to be down from the fourth quarter, when Verizon Wireless put a massive push behind the Droid.

Motorola Droid Getting Minor OTA Update
It is not Android 2.1 yet, but there is a Motorola Android Droid OTA update coming.
The only thing this phantom OTA update seems to actually do is enable Facebook users to update the application from Android Market. Previously users were experiencing data corruption issues when they attempted to bring Facebook up to date but after receiving this OTA – which did not change the version number – they were able to update Facebook without a problem.

Motorola Devour: DroidRedoes Calgary For Verizon With Android 2.1
We first heard about the Motorola Calgary WAY before any mention of the Sholes, Tao or Droid ever occurred. At one point it was the Calgary – NOT the Droid – that was destined to be the first Android Phone for Verizon. We’re not sure how or why that changed but it did, however it won’t change the fact that the phone will still land on Big Red’s lineup. And the latest rumors are that it will touch down as the Motorola Devour A555.

Here is what we’ve got in terms of rumored specs:
- Touch-sensitive Android keys (Menu/Home/Back
- Optical joystick (performs well)
- Full QWERTY keyboard
- 3 megapixel camera
- 3.5mm headset jack
- GPS
- digital magnetometer
- Wi-Fi
- microSD slot
- spring-assisted slider.

The Droid Has Been Rooted — Now What?
As we all know, the Droid has been rooted, now Wired Magazine explains what it means:
A rooted Droid means the user will have administrative rights and the ability to control every aspect of the phone, not just those that Motorola or Verizon have provided access to. A person will be able to download widgets that allow them to overclock their processor or install themes that dramatically change the appearance of their phone. Cyanogen offers custom builds that truly customize a device and provides easy access to hidden features.
For instance, why does the lower-end Droid Eris have multitouch while the high-end Droid doesn’t? Because Motorola and Verizon decided not to implement pinch-to-zoom in the Droid, even though it has the capability to do so.
Now that the Droid is “rooted,” in modder lingo, it will be easy for someone like Cyanogen to simply turn on pinch-to-zoom in a custom build.
Motorola Invests In Sensitive Object
While Motorola is certainly enjoying the success of the Motorola Droid, it’s also looking forward to the future, and the company has recently announced an investment in a firm called Sensitive Object. Sensitive Object has apparently developed a technology that can analyze acoustic waves from the point of contact on the screen. What does that mean? Well, it could potentially give any device touch screen capabilities.

T-Mobile Losing Interest In Motorola Cliq?
While hype for the Motorola Cliq was high, sales of the phone have unfortunately turned out to be unexpectedly low. So low in fact, that Oppenheimer analyst Ittai Kidron says T-Mobile has actually lost interest in the device–due in part to lingering issues with battery life. T-Mobile spokeswoman Alexandra Trask told FierceWireless that sales have been positive and disputes reports that Cliq sales were “falling behind sales targets.” Confirming a future OTA update for the Cliq, no detail was given regarding what would be addressed in the update or whether or not battery life was a prime reason for the update. Trask also denied reports of the device receiving less support, stating that “It’s very prominently featured in our stores. We’re doing a lot from a marketing perspective and merchandising perspective.”
