Motorola Droid gets official multitouch support — in Google Maps

Not even a week after announcing the big multitouch update for its own Nexus One, Google has turned loose a new version of Google Maps that enables pinch-to-zoom support on the Droid. Of course, it was no secret that Android 2.0 had the framework in place to support this kind of stuff — Moto enabled it all by its lonesome on the Euro-spec Milestone — but it looks like this could be the watershed moment where multitouch finally becomes a must-have feature on Android devices across the board, as Moto CEO Sanjay Jha recently suggested would happen.

Motorola Droid Bug deletes all messages and email accounts
We just suffered here from the same problem that Phones Review talked about in December: we turned our Droid on and all the pop3 email accounts and emails disappeared.
Apparently people are talking about this problem in forums for several months and no reply from Verizon, Google, or Motorola.
Here are some of the forums that mention the problem:

Here is the open bug in Google:

Google is also giving away free Nexus One and Verizon Droid handsets to “qualified” developers “to celebrate and inspire the mobile and independent game development communities”.

Motorola Shadow is Nexus Two with sliding QWERTY keyboard?
If rumours have to be believed, the Motorola Shadow is going to be Google’s second smartphone, likely to be called the Nexus Two. It could all be true since the Google Nexus One didn’t have a hardware QWERTY keyboard and introducing a device with one seems like the right idea.
The handset is quite a looker with its black and white colour combination topped with red accents.
The current rumoured features include:
- 4.3″ Touchscreen with 850*480 resolution
- HDMI Port, QWERTY Keyboard
- 8MP Camera with HD Video Recording (1080p)

Nexus One vs Motorola Droid
It has now been confirmed that the Google Phone has been named as “Nexus One”. It has been designed by the folks at Google, and the hardware is manufactured by HTC. Nexus One will be sold online by Google, fully unlocked so that you can use it with any carrier you like. It is being reported that Nexus One will look alot like HTC Passion/Bravo which is also slated for 2010 release.
Redmond Pie has compiled a comparison between the “Nexus One” and the Motorola Droid:

So the Google Phone Is Real!
There really is a Google Phone! The company has started giving away these devices to its employees, who started tweeting about it last night, and the company had to make an announcement this morning. In a blog post on the Android Blog, Mario Queiroz, Vice President, Product Management writes:
We recently came up with the concept of a mobile lab, which is a device that combines innovative hardware from a partner with software that runs on Android to experiment with new mobile features and capabilities, and we shared this device with Google employees across the globe. This means they get to test out a new technology and help improve it. Unfortunately, because dogfooding is a process exclusively for Google employees, we cannot share specific product details. We hope to share more after our dogfood diet.

Verizon commits to ‘newer’ Android for Droid Eris with Google Maps Navigation in Q1 2010
Verizon has just announced that it’ll be bringing the Droid Eris to a “newer” build of Android with integrated Google Maps Navigation for release in the first quarter of 2010. Since Google’s nav app works on 1.6 now, that really doesn’t give us much of a clue which version the Droid Eris can expect to see — but seeing how we have leaked Hero firmwares running on 2.1 at this point, that’d seem like a probable target.

Google Navigation For Motorola Cliq
In an early Thanksgiving present, Google has rolled out Google Navigation to Android 1.6 users. Phones such as the T-Mobile Motorola Cliq can all access the free turn-by-turn navigation Google announced with the Motorola Droid. Be jealous no more, or at least, less jealous.
Users can download the latest version of Google Maps from the Android Market and begin navigating all over the US (the only place it will work) today. The service is in beta and is free.
Note: some Android 2.0 functions will not work on Android 1.6. For example, the “navigate to” voice command will not work on the older Android release.
