Following up: A month with Verizon’s Droid

December 5, 2009 by admin · View Comments

Rob Pegoraro from the Washington Post has an update on his Droid review. Here are some of his points:
* Motorola didn’t build the sturdiest phone ever. As you can see in the photo, the paint on the top edge of the Droid has already begun to wear off from sharing the occasional pocket with change or car keys — a treatment that has yet to inflict any scratches on the iPhones Apple has loaned for my reviews. I’ve also noticed that the Droid’s battery cover slides off too easily.

* The Droid’s slide-out keyboard feels a little too spread out and too flat for fast thumb-typing, compared with the models on such competing Android phones as Sprint’s Samsung Moment or T-Mobile’s Motorola Blur. This has been the No. 1 complaint I’ve received from readers about this phone.

* The Droid’s voice-search feature is borderline amazing — it correctly heard me say “directions to Washington National Airport” in a crowded bar — but beware of invoking this option accidentally by holding down its search button.

T-Mobile Losing Interest In Motorola Cliq?

December 2, 2009 by admin · View Comments

While hype for the Motorola Cliq was high, sales of the phone have unfortunately turned out to be unexpectedly low. So low in fact, that Oppenheimer analyst Ittai Kidron says T-Mobile has actually lost interest in the device–due in part to lingering issues with battery life. T-Mobile spokeswoman Alexandra Trask told FierceWireless that sales have been positive and disputes reports that Cliq sales were “falling behind sales targets.” Confirming a future OTA update for the Cliq, no detail was given regarding what would be addressed in the update or whether or not battery life was a prime reason for the update. Trask also denied reports of the device receiving less support, stating that “It’s very prominently featured in our stores. We’re doing a lot from a marketing perspective and merchandising perspective.”

Motorola’s Android-powered Sholes tablet breaks cover, HDMI port spotted!

The mythical Motorola Sholes tablet is starting to become reality. Since before the launch of the Android-powered Motorola Droid and its slide-out QWERTY keyboard, we’ve been hearing rumors that Motorola has a slate-style (tablet) variant in the works – the Sholes tablet.

Today we now know that the Motorola Sholes tablet picks up where the Droid left off. It’s got the same 3.7-inch 854 x 480 touchscreen, a 3.5mm headphone jack and a robot-chic design aesthetic. Taking things a bit further, we learn that the Sholes sports an 8-megapixel autofocusing camera, HDMI-out port, a TI OMAP 3430 Cortex A8 processor possibly clocked at 800Mhz, multi-touch support and Motorola’s Crystal Talk DSP call enhancement technology. We’re also expecting the Sholes to launch next year with the latest Android 2.1 OS on board, possibly on T-Mobile’s US network.

What is the Android 2.0 release date for the Motorola Cliq

Here is the response that Android and Me got when they asked Motorola if the T-Mobile Cliq would get 2.0. Note how they say the phone can receive updates, but do not confirm 2.0.

“In regards to CLIQ with MOTOBLUR, it can be upgraded over-the-air and will evolve to support how people’s needs change. However, we haven’t announced any updates at this time.

The Droid that was released with Verizon is 2.0. But at this moment we cannot confirm when an upgrade will be available for the Cliq. However the phone is ready to receive software upgrades to both the Google Android OS, and the Moto Blur interface, therefore upgrades are being planned, but we don’t have a release schedule, or confirmation up to which Android version it’s going to upgrade.”

Doesn’t look good for the Cliq…

Android Phone Deals: DROID Eris for $30 & CLIQ for $99

November 24, 2009 by admin · View Comments

Wal-Mart is currently selling the Verizon Droid Eris for $30 with new 2-year contract! That’s 70% off the listed price for a pretty amazing device on the “world’s most reliable network”. Unless you find it for free, it’s probably the best deal available.

If you’re interested in the T-Mobile Motorola CLIQ, T-Mobile is offering $50 off the $199.99 price this Black Friday Weekend. It’ll bring down the total to $149.99 which is infinitely easier to swallow. Or you can just hop on Amazon and grab the CLIQ for $99.99 with new 2-year contract.

Google Navigation For Motorola Cliq

November 24, 2009 by admin · View Comments

In an early Thanksgiving present, Google has rolled out Google Navigation to Android 1.6 users. Phones such as the T-Mobile Motorola Cliq can all access the free turn-by-turn navigation Google announced with the Motorola Droid. Be jealous no more, or at least, less jealous.

Users can download the latest version of Google Maps from the Android Market and begin navigating all over the US (the only place it will work) today. The service is in beta and is free.

Note: some Android 2.0 functions will not work on Android 1.6. For example, the “navigate to” voice command will not work on the older Android release.

T-Mobile USA offering $50 discount on Moto CLIQ, BlackBerry Bold 9700, and Samsung Highlight this weekend

November 23, 2009 by admin · View Comments
Filed under: CLIQ

T-Mobile USA has announced that it will be offering 3 of its most popular phones for US$50 less than normal this coming Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (November 27, 28, and 29). The sale is part of the carrier’s big push for the Black Friday weekend, the unofficial start of the holiday shopping season in the U.S.

Two of the devices on sale are hot smartphones. Both the Android-powered Motorola CLIQ and the brand new BlackBerry Bold 9700 will be available this weekend for $149.99, when picked up with a new contract. The third device is Samsung’s Highlight, a full touchscreen equipped feature phone. The highlight will be available for $49.99 this weekend, with a 2 year agreement.

The $50 discount also applies to phones purchased for full retail price without a contract, for those users interested in saving some money with a contract-free T-Mobile Even More Plus plan.
