Will you keep your Droid when the iPhone comes?

The column that was the first to report that Verizon will indeed get the Palm Pre in early 2010 despite rumors to the contrary, reports that the same source that gave them this exclusive information more or less confirmed that Verizon will get the iPhone in 2010 – most likely in late June or early July.
Will you keep your Motorola Droid or switch to the iPhone when it finally arrives on Verizon?
Motorola Droid Software Update 2.0.1 Is A Winner
Here is a highlight of a review of the new 2.0.1 Motorola Android software version from Information Week:
he update process was extremely quick. Upon booting the device, I received a notification that there was an update available. I accepted the update, which then automatically downloaded, installed, and re-booted the device. The entire experience took perhaps three minutes. Nice.
I noticed immediately that the Droid is faster. Swiping from side-to-side to access the three different home screens was much smoother, with no stuttering. The motions were fluid and looked good. The main menu itself also experienced less stuttering. Swiping up and down to get at all the applications was easy and not herky-jerky as before.
Of course, the main fix is the camera. The camera boots in about 3 seconds now (not bad, but not stellar). Taking pictures has been greatly improved. The camera focuses faster, snaps the picture faster, and processes/saves the image faster. In other words, the camera is actually usable now. Before, it wasn’t. This is a very welcome change indeed.
It is too early for me to comment meaningfully on the supposed battery life improvements, but Verizon says it should perform better.
The Droid Has Been Rooted — Now What?
As we all know, the Droid has been rooted, now Wired Magazine explains what it means:
A rooted Droid means the user will have administrative rights and the ability to control every aspect of the phone, not just those that Motorola or Verizon have provided access to. A person will be able to download widgets that allow them to overclock their processor or install themes that dramatically change the appearance of their phone. Cyanogen offers custom builds that truly customize a device and provides easy access to hidden features.
For instance, why does the lower-end Droid Eris have multitouch while the high-end Droid doesn’t? Because Motorola and Verizon decided not to implement pinch-to-zoom in the Droid, even though it has the capability to do so.
Now that the Droid is “rooted,” in modder lingo, it will be easy for someone like Cyanogen to simply turn on pinch-to-zoom in a custom build.
Droid Ad MOCKS iPhone As ‘Digitally-Clueless Beauty Queen’
The first set of ads for Verizon’s Motorola Droid phone ripped apart the iPhone, taking shot at it for all the things it couldn’t do, but which “Droid does.”
The new Droid commercial takes the nasty up a notch with some serious name-calling of the iPhone (presumably: It refers to Apple’s competitor through hints, and not directly by name).
The new ad refers to the iPhone, Droid’s big rival, as a “tiara-wearing, digitally-clueless beauty pageant queen.”
The Droid, by comparison, compares itself to a “racehorse duct-taped to a skudmissile,” with enough speed and power to “rip through the web like a circular saw through a banana.” A “robot” of a phone that “trades hairdo, for can-do.”

Accessory listing suggests Verizon’s Motorola Calgary is near
It looks like that the second line of Verizon’s Android-powered line from Motorola, the so-called Calgary, is coming soon. This is based on the fact that micro-USB cable accessory showed up on an authorized partner’s site that list the unreleased phone by name.

Motorola Droid Sales Near the One Million Mark

Even before it was released, the Motorola Droid became very popular thanks to Verizon and Motorola, who spent millions of dollars on an advertising campaign. Now, it seems like their efforts are about to pay off, as sales of the Android 2.0-based smartphone are getting close to one million.
According to a research paper by RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Sue, Verizon and Motorola have managed to sell between 700,000 and 800,000 Droids so far in the fourth quarter. It is estimated that the one million target will be hit before the end of this year.

Dell offering Droid for just $119.99
Earlier this month the Motorola Droid was being offered with a two year Verizon contract for $199.99. Now the discounts have started happening and Dell is offering the phone for just $119.99.
The offer states that without an account the Droid would cost you $559.99, but if you sign up for the contract and get the instant discount through Dell then you save $440, or more realistically, $80 off the launch price with a Verizon contract.
The Verizon plan is the Nationwide Basic 900 giving you 900 Minutes talk time and 5 friends & family numbers for a cost of $59.99 a month.
Apparently the offer doesn’t just work for new customers. You can also sign-up as part of a contract extension, according to IntoMobile, opening the offer up to a lot more people.
If you want a Droid I don’t believe there is a cheaper way to get the handset on a contract right now.
Head on over to the Dell Mobility website and check out the details.

Motorola MILESTONE gets second German carrier: Vodafone
German buyers now have a option of choice should they want an Android 2.0 handset. Joining O2 Germany is Vodafone Germany, who are now listing the MILESTONE priced from €99 ($148) with a new contract.

Alternatively, the SIM-free MILESTONE is available on its own, priced at €499.90 ($746). Aside from switching the DROID’s CDMA EVDO Rev.A connection to an HSDPA one, the MILESTONE is the same model as on sale in the US; you also get an 8GB microSD card and 1,400mAh battery.
European buyers get a wired hands-free kit whereas US owners of the Verizon DROID found no such accessory in the box. Vodafone are also offering a free multimedia station to the first 1,000 people to buy the smartphone.
