Can Your Motorola Droid Do That?

While the folks over at Verizon probably enjoyed poking fun at the iPhone and AT&T’s network with its “Droid Does” campaign. AT&T certainly wasn’t too happy about those, evidenced by the lawsuit fired in Verizon’s direction. Now the latest ads emphasize that the Motorola Droid on Verizon Wireless can’t make use of its data connection and maintain a voice call at the same time. With the advertisements showing the user performing a variety of tasks such as browsing the Internet, sending an email amongst others, while still maintaining the call. It ends with “can your network or phone do that?” which is an obvious reference to Verizon Wireless and its Motorola Droid.

Motorola Droid really does; becomes fastest selling Android device

Motorola Droid sales

Motorola Droid suggest VZW’s $100 million integrated marketing campaign paid off. Flurry said 250,000 Droids were sold in week one, compared to 1.6 million iPhone 3G S last June and 60,000 HTC MyTouch 3Gs on T-Mobile in August.

There are clearly extenuating factors in the phones’ launches. Important to note is that Apple launched in eight countries, while Motorola only had one. Apple also has more than 25 million second-generation iPhones already on the market with six million of those users expected to upgrade to the 3G S. With these facts in mind, Flurry said Motorola and Verizon did exceedingly well for themselves in week one. The Droid was the fastest selling Android device to date, beating the MyTouch 3 by a factor of more than four. There are plans to expand the device to more global markets as well, with Motorola forecasting one million units sold before the year’s end.

Flurry estimates sales by the number of new handsets detected within its system, adjusted for the level of Flurry application penetration by handset.

Verizon’s first-weekend Motorola Droid sales were likely modest — judging by the tiny lines for the new Google phones at Verizon stores last Friday — at least compared to first-weekend iPhone sales the last few years.

But that’s okay. No one expected the Verizon Droid to fly off the shelves opening weekend. What matters to Motorola and Verizon is a strong, steady holiday season.

Verizon did not announce first-weekend Verizon Droid activations — the new Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris went on sale Friday morning — but told TheStreet.com that it sold “a lot” of Droids over the weekend. (“We don’t plan on releasing sales figures for the individual products,” the company added.)

“One thing seems clear, had Verizon hit the 1 million mark, you’d know about it,” TheStreet.com’s Scott Moritz writes.
